I’m Back! Subculture Palette First Impression/Demo

As you all may or may not know, I have been off the YouTube grid for a few months now. If you want all the details, please read my previous blog post, but basically I lost my mom. Just getting up and functioning is difficult enough, never mind expending energy on things that I should love. It has been very difficult, to say the least, to move forward. I don’t want to give up on this blog or my channel, and I knew it was time to try to at least do something I love in an effort to push off some of the intense emotions I feel almost all the time. Hopefully you don’t know how this feels, but if you do, any words of encouragement are welcome and appreciated.

ANYWAYS – why you’re here. The Subculture palette by Anastasia Beverly Hills has taken the beauty community by storm and not in a good way. A brand that usually puts out consistent, quality products is under fire for this palette and I totally get why.

I had similar negative experiences to those I saw online – blending is difficult, colors oxidize and the fall out is cray. But at the end of the day, it’s just makeup. I think I may hang onto my palette for a little bit longer to see if I can make it work but if not, I’ll return it. Because ABH has a great return policy and it’s just makeup.

If you want to see how I created the look, which I actually love a LOT, as well as see how it all blended, peep the vid!

Why I Haven’t Been on YouTube

What started as a general lack of inspiration took a turn when on Saturday, April 29th, my mother suddenly passed away. My world has been turned upside down, my heart shattered, and I feel generally like I am living in a fog. I lived my actual nightmare, and haven’t quite found my footing yet. Especially in this context.

A little bit about my mom as she related to this whole blog/channel/YouTube thing…

I know how proud my mom was of my not-that-great but passionate collection of videos on YouTube. She would tell everyone, every time we went somewhere that her daughter was Amber Rae Beauty, and tell me how proud she was of me for it. Mom was constantly admiring whatever I had thrown on my face that day and started trying to do different techniques when we got together. She called me her Makeup geek, because she knew how much Marlena of MUG inspired me to care about makeup and ultimately share my love of beauty online.

While she was certainly flawed and complicated and never easy, the hole that has been left in my heart is irreparable. My mother was warm, bright, funny, an incredible listener, a woman who always had my back. The shock has been replaced by pure sadness, missing her, wishing I could hear her voice.

So, needless to say, it has been difficult to think about doing this. I also do not have time, as we have been very busy getting things in order after she left us without warning. Thank you for sticking around, if you have, and please know that my love for makeup has not faded. I just don’t have it in me right now and I thought it would be getting easier, but it hasn’t.

I am bouncing between abandoning all this and doing it harder than I ever have, I just need time to sort it out.

xoxo

Random Color Makeup Challenge

If you don’t know who Mariah Leonard is, aka The Gals Guide, stop everything and go check out her channel! She created a challenge where she randomly selects eye shadows, blush, highlight and lip color to inspire creativity and force you to come up with something interesting. When my colors were first chosen I had no idea how I was going to make these shadows work but I did and I LOVED the outcome! I have a feeling this is the first of many times I randomly grab colors to create a makeup look. Life is too short to always wear the same five eye shadows 🙂

Get Ready With Me Before Work // Stila Magnificent Metals

When you’re so excited about a glittery new product that you HAVE to shoot a quick, genuine Get Ready With Me in the morning before work. I think I literally gasped out loud when I saw this Stila glittery goodness in Ulta, as I had been searching for it without success at every Sephora I went to. It was a mildly out of body experience swatching all that shiny, liquid metal on my hand. It was painstaking choosing the right shade but I think I nailed it with this gray, bronzey shade.

Foiled Green Eye Shadow & Peach Lips Featuring Makeup Geek’s Voodoo

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day I am bringing you a seriously beautiful green foiled eye makeup look! I myself am not of Irish descent but I do enjoy a Guinness & corned beef so count me in. I also love any excuse to get creative & fun with my makeup, and holidays are the best excuse maybe ever for this kind of behavior. I can’t get over this foiled pigment though…Marlena you have nailed it once again! As always, use whatever you have to achieve a similar look or just feel inspired by what I’ve slapped on my mug. Love you guys!

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea First Impression + Demo + Thoughts

It has been about a week since I filmed my first impression on this foundation which you can watch riiiiiight here! For more thoughts, read below the video.

Everything about this foundation sounds right – hydrating, dewy, great coverage. But I have SUCH mixed reviews on this foundation! While I love the way the foundation sat on my cheeks, I found that it quickly wore off my nose especially and chin. I’ve tried a few different primers but none of them seem to make the foundation adhere to my nostrils (does anyone have a tip for this problem?!). Benefit’s Porefessional has been working ok with this foundation but I still haven’t found the holy grail combination!

I also found that I don’t like either a brush or sponge to apply this product – I actually prefer using my fingers! I never use my fingers to apply foundation but I was getting desperate and I really want to love this foundation so I tried it and I loved the result! Because it is a thinner, lower coverage product it is ideal for applying this way, much like a BB Cream.

PROS:

  • Perfect color match
  • Thin formula that easily builds
  • Lasts well on the places it does stay
  • Looks natural on the skin

CONS

  • Dropper is not easy to use and doesn’t dispense product consistently
  • You need a lot of product! Both my sponge and brush sucked up a considerable amount of product
  • Without proper setting it easily comes off
