Monday Thoughts

Writing a beauty blog + maintaining a YouTube channel could be viewed as the ultimate form of narcism, as it requires me to plaster my face all made up on various bits of the internet. Believe me, I don’t always look that way, and beauty isn’t the only thing in life I care about. I work a full-time job as an advocate, I am passionate about womens’ issues, I sometimes sing and perform, I’m a fairly avid reader. But my greatest passion is beauty…I am a total product junkie when it comes to makeup, bath and body, hair + nails. Through this passion I have discovered a whole community of people who share this adoration, people who I can connect with + learn tips from, read reviews + help me add to my ever growing wish list.

One night a few years ago I couldn’t sleep so I went on YouTube and searched, “Makeup for small eyes”. I clicked on a video by a user called Makeup Geek & was captivated by the transformation made with makeup by this bubbly, intelligent woman. I never thought to look to other people on YouTube for this kind of advice. The most I had ever used YouTube for was figuring out how to fold the dreaded fitted sheet. Further searches provided tutorials for everything imaginable…the perfect red lip, a smokey eye, looks appropriate for all seasons and occasions. I was hooked. I had always liked picking up new cosmetics, hair products and nail polish but through this new medium my knowledge expanded, as did my collection of products.

My boyfriend watched this transformation in me and eventually asked me why I wasn’t making videos to post on YouTube, why didn’t I have my own blog? Over time he gifted me all the necessary components to creating my own content. A camera, lighting, backdrops, software. One day I stopped saying, yeah maybe, and actually committed to a blog + channel of my own. I usually keep my passions close; I was afraid to sing in front of people for fear that they would tell me I wasn’t as talented as I thought. The same went for my makeup application skills…what if people didn’t think I was good enough or worth watching?

It finally clicked for me that no matter what, I have my blog and my channel because I have a passion, I do it because it is genuinely fun to create original content about this topic I love so much. To me, makeup is a form of creative expression. Creativity is a powerful thing, one that can relieve stress, take your mind off the worries you harbor.

“Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun.” — Mary Lou Cook

I will never be the most talented, I won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s ok. I have had the opportunity to connect with some insanely kind human beings through this medium, people who share this passion and are excited about the same things I am. It’s nice to feel connected, to encourage and to inspire. That’s all I really want to do here. I want to inspire people to go outside their comfort zone + try something new with beauty. While physical beauty certainly shouldn’t be valued above all else, exuding confidence because you feel beautiful isn’t such a bad thing.

I hope this has given you a little insight into why I started my blog + why I continue to post. I am always striving to make improvements, make it more appealing, more interesting. My goals here are to hone my craft, be open to new ideas, to have a little community here that is supportive + kind, building each other up instead of spreading negativity. If you’re along for the ride, I’m psyched to have you here! Thank you for reading, sharing, commenting, engaging. Let’s have some fun!
